Sunshine & Skin
As the weather warms up, you will be showing more and more of your skin. Most of us know that we "should" wear sunscreen but still don't. Or maybe you use a tinted moisturizer or makeup product with a nominal SPF. Here are some sunscreen do's and don'ts to help you PROTECT your skin this spring.
- Do find a sunscreen that has true BROAD SPECTRUM coverage. The FDA allows products to state that they have Broad Spectrum coverage even if it is incomplete coverage.
- Don't apply your sunscreen last minute. Most sunscreens take approximately 30 minutes to absorb completely and be effective.
- Do reapply as needed, especially if you have toweled off after getting out of the water. It doesn't matter what product you use, it won't work if you wipe it off.
- Don't forget your ears, neck, lips and decollete! The most common skin cancers are found on the nose (where sunscreen is wiped off easily), lips, ears, back of the neck and other neglected areas.
- Do treat your entire body. Sunscreens are designed to block out harmful UVB and UVA rays. You can still get some color while protecting your body.
- Don't forget to schedule your annual visit to your Dermatologist. We recommend Michelle McBride at Southside Dermatology.
All SkinCeuticals brand sunscreens are true Broad Spectrum, and come in a variety of formulas. This enables us to find the right one for you. Tiffany uses Active UV Defense SPF 15 to protect her from UVA rays, since she sits in front of glass all day. Teri uses Ultimate UV Defense 30, because it is formulated for people with sensitive skin (and children) because she doesn't like that most products make her eyes burn. There is a sun care product that is right for everyone. We offer free consultations, so bring in what you are using and see how it measures up! Also, you can use your FLEX (Health Care Reimbursement Account) card to get reimbursed for your SkinCeuticals SunScreen.
